A hearty and comforting casserole featuring ground beef sloppy joe mixture layered with creamy cheese and crispy tater tots, perfect for a family dinner.
1 pound ground beef
1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 (16 ounce) bag frozen tater tots
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until the beef is browned and the onion is softened, about 7-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
Add ketchup, water, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir well to combine.
Reduce heat to medium and simmer the sloppy joe mixture for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Spread the sloppy joe mixture evenly in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the meat mixture.
Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the cheese.
Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the tater tots.
Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Remove from oven and let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.
