Enjoy crispy, gooey mozzarella sticks made fresh in your air fryer without the need for freezing. This quick and easy recipe uses a simple breading technique to achieve a golden crust and melty cheese center.
12 sticks mozzarella cheese, about 3 inches long
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
2 tablespoons water
1 1/2 cups Italian-style seasoned breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Cooking spray
Cut each mozzarella stick in half if desired for smaller portions and set aside.
Place the flour in a shallow bowl.
In a second shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs and water until smooth.
In a third shallow bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, garlic powder, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper.
One at a time, dredge each mozzarella stick first in the flour, shaking off any excess.
Then dip it into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off.
Finally, coat the stick thoroughly in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
Repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating step one more time for a double coating to help prevent cheese leakage.
Place the coated mozzarella sticks on a plate or tray and let them rest for 5 minutes to set the coating.
Preheat the air fryer to 390°F (200°C) for 3 minutes.
Spray the air fryer basket lightly with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
Arrange the mozzarella sticks in a single layer in the basket, making sure they do not touch.
Spray the tops of the mozzarella sticks lightly with cooking spray.
Air fry for 7 to 8 minutes, turning halfway through, until the coating is golden brown and crispy.
Carefully remove the mozzarella sticks from the air fryer and serve immediately with marinara sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.
